The New Mexico Press Association will select seven journalism students and recent graduates for a paid College Journalism Workshop during its annual convention in Santa Fe, Nov. 11-12.

“The New Mexico Press Association is excited to continue its College Journalism Workshop,” Executive Director Sammy Lopez said. “Paid experience working side by side with experienced journalists gives students real-world experience while industry leaders get to meet and network with new talent.”

Participants will take photographs, do interviews, cover meetings and write stories on deadline during the NMPA convention. Those selected will arrive Nov.10 and stay through Nov. 12.

Their work will be featured in a newspaper published on Nov. 12, before the awards banquet. Articles and photos in the publication will also be posted on NMPA’s website, nmpress.org.

The Press Association will give each participant a $200 stipend and cover the cost of three nights (Thursday-Saturday) at the Eldorado Hotel & Spa, including meals, access to all convention workshops and speakers (time permitting), and the awards banquet, a value of $592.

The highlight of the weekend is the NMPA awards banquet, which showcases the year’s best work from newspapers and newspaper websites from around the state.

The deadline to apply for the College Journalism Workshop is Tuesday, Oct. 25. Students will be notified of selection no later than Monday, Oct. 31. Those selected will need to provide their own equipment, such as laptops and cameras, for the workshop.
